Creating A Fluid Width Banner (With Images) Using CSS

Creating a fluid width (extensible) banner is quite easy but using one that has images is a bit tricky. In this article, I am going to explain how to create a fluid width image banner.

Introduction

Fluid width means the banner must keep it's aspect, no matter the browser / screen width (more or less). For instance, if we have a banner with an image on the right side and some text on the left, it's not that easy making the banner expand / shrink so that it looks the same on any screen resolution. But with some CSS, this can be done in just a few minutes.

Fluid Width Banner example

Go to the DEMO PAGE and change the size of your browser's width. The banner will look the same, even if you shrink or enlarge the window (sure, if you shrink it too much, It won't look good anymore, but that's because I used 2 quite large images for the left and right parts of the banner; I guess I could have made them smaller but it's all the same in the end...).

You can look at the source code of that page. You'll notice that the whole banner is not just one image, but actually three.

Fix Broken AVI Video Files With DivFix++ [Windows, Linux and Mac OSX]

DivFix++

DivFix++ is an open source AVI video repair and preview software which works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. It was designed for repair and preview of files downloaded from bittorrent, gnutella, emule, ftp, web or any such source and it can repair AVI and DivX files (for now).

The interface and operation are straight forward. Just select where you want the repaired file to be saved, use drag and drop to add the videos which need repairing, into the Source Files pane and that's about it. Repair time was fairly quick and the resource utilization is pretty low. The application requires no installation on Windows, you just simply have to unzip the archive.

We can cut a piece of the image in the form of a rectangle or other geometric shape or automatically select a shape with the magic wand tool. And as for the retouching of photographs, HeliosPaint can rotate or deform giving perspective, and even add filters to change colors, appear to blur or painted in oil.

Eeebuntu Switching To Debian, No Longer Just for EeePC

You may have heard of Andrew Wyatt, a lead developer for Eeebuntu which recently posted on his personal blog that he is fed up with Ubuntu and he will abandon the project.

Eeebuntu is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, build for Asus EeePC which was awarded the Best New Project award for 2009 in the SourceForge Community Choice Awards.

Well, he is not abandoning Eeebuntu, but instead, Eeebuntu will switch to Debian. That's right, Eeebuntu 4.0 will not be created with Ubuntu as the core, but instead it will be build upon Debian Unstable.

Free AutoCAD Alternative: BRL-CAD

BRL-CADAutoCAD is one of the most expensive applications, but also indispensable for many types of jobs. Being so expensive, it's a good reason to look for free alternatives. QCad is one of the alternatives but sometimes it's just not enough.

BRL-CAD is a free, open-source alternative to AutoCAD, developed by the U.S. military in collaboration with NASA. It offers more than 400 tools, utilities, and applications comprising more than a million lines of source code. The package is intentionally designed to be extensively cross-platform and is actively developed on and maintained for many common operating system environments including for BSD, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, and Windows among others.
