Jupiter Applet Finally Available For Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

Update: Jupiter has been discontinued. I suggest trying TLP instead.

Jupiter Ubuntu 11.10

Jupiter is an applet designed for netbooks and laptops that you can use to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on. If you own an Asus EeePC netbook, there's also a separate package that adds support for Asus Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) as well as some other EeePC tweaks.

Jupiter doesn't work by default in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot due to some Mono changes, but you can now use it thanks to a "hack" provided by WebUpd8 reader mtron. If you want to help getting Jupiter to work in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot without this "hack", get the Jupiter source code from HERE.

Please note that because of a bug in Unity 2D, the Jupiter icon won't show up in the systray (it works just fine in Unity 3D though).

WebUpd8 PPAs Updates: Jupiter 0.0.48, Haguichi 1.0.4

Jupiter

Jupiter

Jupiter is an applet which allows you to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on. But most importantly it allows your Eeepc netbook to take advantage of SHE (Super Hybrid Engine).

Jupiter 0.0.48 has been released yesterday and is now available in the Jupiter WebUpd8 PPA. This update corrects multiple issues with WIFI and Bluetooth toggles. Also, Jupiter now has an website - check it out @ jupiterapplet.org.

WebUpd8 PPAs Updates: Rhythmbox, Jupiter, DockBarX

Rhythmbox

We've backported the latest Rhythmbox version from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The new version comes with bug fixes as well as a new feature: the play button now changes to pause and stop when needed.

Jupiter Ubuntu PPA (Hardware And Power Management Applet For Netbooks And Laptops)

Update: Jupiter has been discontinued. I suggest trying TLP instead.

jupiter ubuntu

A while back we told you about Jupiter, an application created by Fewt for Aurora OS (ex Eeebuntu) (but also works in other Linux distributions) which can be used to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on. But most importantly it allows your Eeepc netbook to take advantage of SHE (Super Hybrid Engine).

Jupiter is not just for EeePC, it also works on other netbooks or laptops. Read our Jupiter review for more info.

Since Jupiter can only be downloaded by Ubuntu users via Sourceforge, we've created a PPA for Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid and Maverick users so they can stay up to date with the latest Jupiter packages.

Control Your EeePC And Assign Custom Fn Shortcuts With Eee Control [Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx]

eee-control ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx

Until Karmic, a lot of people used EeePC Tray, an utility to set the performance profiles, switch on/off some integrated peripherals and assign custom Fn key shortcuts. But EeePC Tray doesn't work in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid anymore.

However, there's another utility very similar to EeePC Tray called Eee Control which has almost the same functions and works on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx too (although the description says it's for Karmic - I've tested it in Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 Lucid Lynx).

Enable Fn Keys On Your Asus EeePC and Ubuntu 10.04 And 10.10

It's both nice and bad when I upgrade to a newer Ubuntu version. The good part is I have lots of posts material for the blog but the bad part is there's always something on my main computer or netbook which doesn't work out of the box and needs tweaking.

I really didn't expect the Fn keys to work out of the box on my Asus EeePC 1005HA (so this method has only been tested for this Asus EeePC model, I don't know if it works on others) and unfortunately I was right. However, the fix is very quick. Here's what you have to do.

Eeebuntu 4 Beta 1 Overview And Screenshots

eeebuntu 4 beta 2

Eeebuntu, the Linux distribution for netbooks which won the Sourceforge Choice Awards: BEST NEW PROJECT in 2009 has released the first beta of the new version 4. For now only the i386 version is available. In case you plan on installing this beta, you should read the known issues firs:

  • On installing, when you get to the summary screen, you need to choose ADVANCED and select your HD install target. (it was thought that this was not enough to hold it back any further but will be fixed in final). - or this will cause GRUB install error.
  • Do NOT run update in live before you install, there is a python upgrade that will break the installer (again it was thought that was not enough to hold back the beta release).
  • In some cases you need root password in live to change things, you can set the root password by issuing #sudo passwd in terminal.

Like we told you some time ago, Eeebuntu switched from Ubuntu to Debian (Sid) and also it's no longer just for EeePC.
