Jupiter Applet Finally Available For Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

Jupiter Ubuntu 11.10

Jupiter is an applet designed for netbooks and laptops that you can use to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on. If you own an Asus EeePC netbook, there's also a separate package that adds support for Asus Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) as well as some other EeePC tweaks.

Jupiter doesn't work by default in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot due to some Mono changes, but you can now use it thanks to a "hack" provided by WebUpd8 reader mtron. If you want to help getting Jupiter to work in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot without this "hack", get the Jupiter source code from HERE.

Please note that because of a bug in Unity 2D, the Jupiter icon won't show up in the systray (it works just fine in Unity 3D though).

It's both nice and bad when I upgrade to a newer Ubuntu version. The good part is I have lots of posts material for the blog but the bad part is there's always something on my main computer or netbook which doesn't work out of the box and needs tweaking.

I really didn't expect the Fn keys to work out of the box on my Asus EeePC 1005HA (so this method has only been tested for this Asus EeePC model, I don't know if it works on others) and unfortunately I was right. However, the fix is very quick. Here's what you have to do.

Easy Peasy is a Linux distribution also known as "Ubuntu Eee", an independent project not affiliated in any way with Canonical / Ubuntu or Asus / EeePC which firstly had the name "Ubuntu Eee" but later renamed to "Easy Peasy" to avoid trademark issues.


What exactly is Easy Peasy Linux? Here is what it's developers have to say:

Basically, Easy Peasy is an operating system optimized for netbooks. Among the changes in version 1.5:

* Linux kernel 2.6.30 optimized for netbooks.
* Support for most netbooks.
* Many software updates (Google Picasa, OpenOffice 3.1 etc.).
* It is based on Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04)
