Best Linux Twitter Client?

We didn't have a poll in a long time because well..., we already had a poll about almost every type of application and for the rest, there are too many choices. This is why, today we're going to do it a bit differently. Read on!

This post is not an actual poll, but only for nominating the best Twitter client for Linux. So, what's the best Linux Twitter client? What you must do is simply write a comment on this post stating your vote. Example: "vote Pino".  You can of course discuss on the subject too, but firstly make sure you enter your vote.

The 5 most nominated applications will then be included in a poll next week. Please only nominate one Twitter application!

We're using nominations because there are a lot of Linux Twitter clients and I don't know which are the most popular 5 to use in a poll. Also, if we'd only vote using the comment system, the votes wouldn't be very accurate since a lot of people don't like to comment and just want to click the "vote" button. So, to have more accurate results, the actual poll will run in a week after todays' nominations and will include the top 5 most nominated Linux Twitter clients.

Tired Of Tweaking Ubuntu? Try Pinguy OS 10.10 Beta 2! [Ubuntu Remaster]

Pinguy OS 10.10 beta 2

Update: Pinguy OS 10.10 final has been released!

Want most of the popular application you read about on blogs such as WebUpd8 installed by default? Or maybe you install Ubuntu for some friends or family and you get tired from all the tweaking required to get audio/video/flash and so on to work? You could use Pinguy OS to save yourself some time and get a beautiful and equally useful Ubuntu installation in just a few minutes.

The remastered "Ubuntu after a week of customizations" Pinguy OS 10.10 beta 2 has just been released. For those of you who are not familiar with Pinguy: it's an Ubuntu remaster with a lot of useful default applications "built to have eye candy (Gloobus Preview, GNOME Do, Docky, Elementary*) and for every part of it to be user-friendly".

What's new in Pinguy 10.10 Beta 2?

The major change in Pinguy OS 10.10 is obviously that it uses Ubuntu 10.10 as a base, but there are also a few other interesting changes such as the addition of NotifyOSD Configuration, Vineyard and WineGame which should make Wine a lot more user-friendly and Pastie. Also, the latest Pinguy 10.10 beta 2 comes adds all the Equinox themes, as well as the now well-known Faenza icons (including Faenza Cupertino) - they are not used by default though:

TweetDeck 0.36 Adds Real-Time Streaming

TweetDeck

Even though personally I am not a fan of Adobe Air applications and prefer native Twitter clients on Linux, I cannot ignore an amazing application such as TweetDeck which comes with some very interesting features like real-time Twitter streaming - a feature that has been added for all users (it was previously enabled in a test version) in the latest TweetDeck 0.36.

WatchVideo Can Download, Rip, Convert And Play Videos From YouTube And Many Other Video Sharing Websites

WatchVideo

WatchVideo is a Qt application (but also comes with a command-line version) to play, download, rip or convert (to Ogg) videos from Bliptv, Break, CaracolTV, CineGratis24h, CollegeHumor, Current, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Sapovideos, TheOnion, Vimeo, YouTube, and others.

What makes WatchVideo special is that besides being able to download videos from many video sharing websites, it can also rip/convert and play them, either using an external player (such as Totem or VLC) or you can use the internal player (mplayer - this is an experimental feature in the latest version). The rip/convert/play actions can be set to occur once a video has finished downloading which is a real time-saver feature. WatchVideo also comes with NotifyOSD notifications for Ubuntu users.

Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper Sets Your Wallpaper To An Image Of Earth's Sunlight/Darkness

realtime sunlight wallpaper app

Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper is an application which sets your wallpaper to an image of the Earth's sunglight/darkness - updated every 30 minutes. The wallpaper also displays clouds which are updated every 3 hours with the current weather satellite imagery.

A few days ago, version 0.3 was released which adds options to change the wallpaper style and background color. I wanted to write about Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper back when version 0.3 was released, but the application failed to start for some users (including myself). Luckily, a new version (0.3.1) has been released today which fixes this.

Here are some of the available (almost)-real-time wallpapers included in the Realtime Sunlight Wallpaper application:

Ubuntu 11.04 (Desktop) Will Get The Global Menu (AppMenu) By Default

Global Menu Unity

The AppMenu (also referred to as "global menu") is an applet which removes the menu from the application windows and places it on the top panel (see the above screenshot) which results in more vertical screen space. This is especially useful on netbooks, but desktops too can use the extra pixels gained by using this applet.

Even though Unity as been confirmed as default for Ubuntu 11.04 - desktop edition, there were still talks if the desktop version should also use the global menu (AppMenu).

I'm not sure when, but it seems it has been decided that the global menu will be used on Ubuntu 11.04 (desktop) too - this has been confirmed by Jorge Castro @ AskUbuntu:

Script To Watch A Folder And Upload New Images To PicasaWeb

Patrick @ Platechnotes created a simple but very useful script which automatically uploads the new images in a folder to your PicasaWeb account. The script uses GoogleCL, a tool released by Google for managing most Google services via command line.

What this script does is check a folder for new images and when you add a new image, it is instantly uploaded to your PicasaWeb account (in an album you set in the script). Note that the script will not upload any images that already exist in that folder. When an image is successfully uploaded to PicasaWeb, the script notifies you of this (using NotifyOSD) and opens the link to the image in a new web browser tab (but you can remove this behavior easily if you don't want it).
