Stable SparkleShare (0.2) Released With Pluggable Backend, Mercurial Support [Cloud Sync Tool]

SparkleShare

Sparkleshare is an open source tool to synchronize your files in the cloud and it can use a GitHub, Gitorious or your own private GIT server. For now, SparkleShare is easy to install under Linux and Mac, "but it’s hard to get running and it doesn’t integrate well with the system" on Windows, says Hylke, the SparkleShare developer. Android and iPhone clients might be released in the future too.

Install Pinta 0.8 In Ubuntu, Now Available For Natty Too

Pinta 0.8 was released last week and seeing that its PPA still provides version 0.5, I've uploaded it to the WebUpd8 PPA. For some reason, even the Ubuntu 11.04 repositories haven't been updated since Pinta 0.6 so starting today I'll also be providing Natty packages for Pinta.

Pinta is a simplified image editor based on Paint.NET (and thus it uses Mono), designed to serve as an alternative to GIMP for casual users.

Pinta 0.6 was released about a week ago and includes a huge list of bug fixes but the latest Pinta is not available in its PPA so I've decided to backport the Natty package to Lucid and Maverick.

Banshee Is Not Replacing Rhythmbox In Linux Mint 11

Banshee

Clement Lefebvre, the Linux Mint founder, recently talked to Muktware about Banshee - which has replaced Rhythmbox in the recent Ubuntu 11.04 development builds -, and Mono. Banshee is an amazing application but it uses Mono which many consider risky because Microsoft could one day assert its patents against all the free applications that use Mono.

While Clement says he doesn't consider Mono a thread, it looks like Rhythmbox will stay as default in Linux Mint:

Rhythmbox is our default player and we're quite happy with it. If Ubuntu switches to Banshee, we'll of course give it a close look and assess whether the migration is a good move for us too, but as it is now there isn't any plan to change anything.

As you probably already know by now, Linux Mint will not switch to Unity either, keeping the old "classic" GNOME as default.

Pinta 0.5, Released With Clone Stamp Tool, Multiple Image Support And More [PPA]

Pinta is a simplified image editor based on Paint.NET (and thus it uses Mono), designed to serve as an alternative to GIMP for casual users. Pinta 0.5 has been released yesterday with new features, such as multiple image support, procedural brushes (painting effects with new procedural paint brushes, such as splatter, squares, circles, and grid) and a clone stamp tool which you can use to easily remove unwanted objects from photos:

F-Spot 0.8.0

F-Spot was the default photo manager for Ubuntu until 10.10 when it will be replaced with Shotwell.


F-Spot 0.8.0 was released 2 days ago with a complete new import system, improved duplicate detection, photo panning using the mouse as well as other features which you can see by reading the official F-Spot 0.8.0 release announcement. Further more, the new version also fixes almost 300 bugs!

How To Run KeePass Password Safe In Ubuntu

KeePass Linux

KeePass Password Safe is an open-source password management utility. There is a KeePass version for Linux: KeePassX. But KeePassX has fewer features and it's development is slower.

If you don't mind using mono, you can use KeePass instead of KeePassX under Linux. Here is how to do it.

Kupfer Monochrome Icons

WebUpd8 reader Nasser Alshammari sent us some nice Kupfer monochrome icons that go well with the Ubuntu Ambiance and Radiance themes. He writes:

The only side effect of this is that it'll replace the colorful logo in the menu entry and in the "About" dialog of Kupfer. So until this issue is solved and for all the monochrome fanatics out there, they can do it this way for now.

To install them, replace the ~/.icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/kupfer.svg icon with one of the icons below.
