Tor GUI `SelekTOR` Sees New Major Release

SelekTOR, an open source Java-based GUI front-end for Tor, was updated to version 3.12 (now 3.12e) recently and it includes new advanced options as well as a new Tor Monitor panel that shows the Tor client startup info and its current status.

SelekTOR is an open source Java-based GUI front-end for the Tor Client which has a few advantages over Vidalia (the official Tor GUI), such as:
  • Simplifies the usage and configuration of Tor in client mode, SelekTOR does most of the hard stuff for you;
  • you can quickly select Tor exit nodes by country;
  • SelekTOR can continuously monitor and maintain a connection to the exit node with the best response time, with as little downtime as possible;
  • as well as proxying all traffic through the active Tor node, SelekTOR can also do selective routing of traffic through the active tor node based on URL patterns.

The option to select the Tor exit nodes by country can be used to access websites which aren't available in your country, such as Netflix, Hulu, CBS, ABC, Pandora, British TV, HBO Go and so on (these depend on your country, obviously).

Tribler BitTorrent Client To Become Anonymous, Version 6.3.1 Released

A year after the previous release, a new Tribler version was released recently and it includes new features, bug fixes as well as work towards anonymous streaming (using a built-in Tor-like network).

For those not familiar with Tribler, this is an open source, decentralized peer-to-peer client based on the BitTorrent protocol, supported by EU and Dutch research funding. The application includes features such as wiki-style channels, video-on-demand (watch videos while you download them) and more and is available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

As you might have noticed, I was on holiday* until today and because of that, there were no new articles on WebUpd8 and no updates for the WebUpd8 PPAs. Today I updated the PPA packages for most applications that had a new release while I was away, and to speed things up, below you'll find a quick list with what was updated / what's new.

Tor Browser Bundle is a web browser based on Firefox ESR (Firefox with extended support), configured to protect users' privacy and anonymity by using Tor and Vidalia, tools that come bundled with it. The bundle also includes 4 Firefox extensions: TorButton, TorLauncher, NoScript and HTTPS-Everywhere.

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis.

The Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat final release is very close (23 days) yet so many repositories are not ready for it: GetDeb, Medibuntu and many others. So we must find alternatives to install some applications.

TOR was available in a PPA for Ubuntu (sevenmachines) which has been deleted. There is also an official TOR Ubuntu repository which unfortunately has also not been updated for Maverick, just like the repositories I mentioned above. But the Lucid packages work just fine - I'm running it on Maverick for a month now and everything works. So here is how to add this repository in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and install TOR:
