Configure Qt5 Application Style, Icons, Fonts And More With Qt5ct

Unlike Qt4, Qt5 doesn't come with a configuration tool to allow setting the icon theme, fonts or the style and instead, it tries to use the settings from the running desktop environment.

This works well for KDE and GNOME (as well as Unity) but you may encounter issues under other desktop environments such as Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE and others (I'm not sure what Qt5 versions are affected by this, but it seems to be fixed in the latest Qt 5.5.1 according to THIS comment).

Here's an example (Audacious 3.7 using the Qt5 interface under Linux Mint 17.2 with Cinnamon):

Workaround For Black / Distorted Battle.net UI On Linux (Wine) With Intel Graphics

Blizzard's Battle.net tool was updated recently, probably in preparation for the upcoming WoW expansion called Warlords of Draenor, resulting in either a black screen or distorted / scrambled graphics on Linux (with Wine) with Intel graphics.

It looks like this is not a Wine or Battle.net bug but an Intel graphic drivers bug, at least that's what the Wine developers suggest.

New Unity Revamped PPA For Ubuntu 12.04 With Extra Tweaks

The popular Unity Revamped PPA has stopped working once again a while back, but there's a new PPA that adds the same features to Unity along with some extra ones such as the Unity Touch Launcher icons.

The new Unity Revamped PPA, maintained by Garhuy, is only available for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and adds the following features to Unity (with Compiz):
  • re-added Dodge Windows behavior;
  • minimize on click for Launcher items;
  • option to enable/disable the Workspace Switcher icon on the Launcher
  • Ubuntu Raring launcher assets (the new BFB icon - the button used to open Dash, workspace switcher, etc);
  • Ubuntu Touch Launcher icons.

Unity Tweak Tool Available In The Ubuntu Repositories

Unity Tweak Tool

Unity Tweak Tool is a relatively new application that allows you to configure Unity, providing access to settings buried deep in Dconf-Tools or CCSM.

The tool developed by the freyja-dev team is now available in the Ubuntu Software Center, so there's no need to use a PPA any more, which should expose this excellent tool to a lot more users. The application is also available in a PPA for Ubuntu 12.10.

Eclipse IDE: Get Ubuntu AppMenu And HUD Support

By default, the popular Eclipse IDE does not support the Ubuntu AppMenu or  HUD. The reason for this is that Eclipse has been blacklisted so it wouldn't use the AppMenu around the time of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat because it didn't work back then.

Now Eclipse does work with the AppMenu, however, there are some minor glitches like some menu shortcuts not being displayed (although they do work). If this isn't a problem for you, here's a quick way to whitelist Eclipse so it can make use of Ubuntu's Appmenu and HUD.

Below you can see Eclipse IDE with global menu and HUD support running in Ubuntu 13.04:

Spotify Ubuntu Ambiance Theme

Michael Tunnell has created a nice Ambiance theme for Spotify which makes the Spotify Linux client integrate better with the Ubuntu desktop.

For those not familiar with Spotify, this is a music streaming service with comes with desktop applications for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X as well as iOS, Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone. The service is available in a limited number of countries. More @ Wikipedia.

The Ambiance Spotify theme comes with Ambiance-like toolbar and colors, a better Spotify tray icon especially designed to look like the Ubuntu Mono Dark icon set (the default icons used in Ubuntu), along with other tweaks that try to give Spotify a more native feel.

Here's a screenshot in which I'm using the Ambiance Spotify theme in Ubuntu:
