Shutter Screenshot Tool Gets New Upload Plugins (Including: Dropbox, TwitPic, Imgur, Minus)

Shutter, probably the best screenshot tool for Linux, has been updated today, getting many new upload plugins for services such as Dropbox, ImageShack, Imgur, Minus, Omploader, TwitPic, UbuntuPics and more.

Ubuntu Application Indicator For Shutter (Screenshot Tool)

Shutter Indicator

Because of a bug in Unity, I try to avoid using regular notification area icons and only use AppIndicators. Unfortunately, Shutter (an amazing screenshot tool for Linux) doesn't have an Application Indicator and it doesn't seem like it will be getting one any time soon (because there are no Perl bindings for AppIndicator).

Since I want to learn Python and because Shutter is an application I use daily, I've decided to create an external AppIndicator for Shutter. The code is probably very bad since this is the first time I write something in Python but it works for me so I wanted to share it with you.

Shutter 0.86 Development Build Adds Lots Of New Features And Improvements [PPA]

shutter 0.86

I recently came across the Shutter Testing PPA and decided to give the new Shutter 0.86 (testing - not yet released) version a try and I was impressed with the new features and improvements Shutter will be getting so I started using this new version. Since I didn't encounter any bugs, I decided to write an article about it so you can enjoy this development build too.

Shutter is a screenshot taking application for Linux which you can use to capture a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website – apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then upload to an image hosting site, all within one window.

Shutter 0.85 Released - Advanced Screenshots Tool For Linux

shutter 0.85

After 15 weeks of development, Shutter 0.85 has finally been released. Shutter is a feature-rich screenshot program. You can take a screenshot of a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website – apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then upload to an image hosting site, all within one window.

New in Shutter 0.85:

"Lightbox" Image Viewing Effect on Every Webpage using a Greasemonkey Script

photobucket
(click the image after the website completely loads to see the effect)

A few days ago we wrote about how to implement into your website an image viewer called Shutter Reloaded, similar to Lightbox. But you can have all the images displayed in Firefox use a similar Lightbox effect, by using a Greasemonkey plugin called Greased Lightbox.

How to use: install then browse over to an image site such as Flickr or perform a Google image search. Click on an image then browse the images with the arrow keys. Press "+" to zoom in, "-" to zoom out, "0" for full size, and "x","Esc", or mouse-click on the image to exit.

The verdict: a very nice effect indeed. Not as fancy and ambitious as, say, something like CoolIris (formerly PicLens) and it’s 3D wall of images, but depending on what you like this may be a good thing.

Compatibility: works with Firefox with Greasemonkey extension or Safari with GreaseKit or Opera 8+

Install Greased Lightbox.

Lightweight Image Viewer for Your Website: Shutter Reloaded - How to Implement It

I've been asked to share the image preview code from my blog so I decided to make a tutorial about it. It is called Shutter Reloaded and you can see it in action below (in the screenshot and also while you click it ;) - you need to wait for the whole webpage to load and only then click the image)

photobucket

Shutter Reloaded is an image viewer for your website that works similarly to Lightbox, Thickbox, etc. but is only about 10KB in size and does not require any external libraries. It has many features: resizing large images if the window is too small to display them with option to show the full size image, combining images in sets, redrawing the window after resizing, pre-loading of neighbour images for faster display and very good browser compatibility.

How to implement Shutter Reloaded into your website / blog

1. The first thing you need to do is download the code from here.

2. Extract the contents of the archive and go to the shutter folder and open shutter.js with a text editor. You will find some variables with explainations on what they do in the upper part of the file, the explainations in that file are enough so I won't write it again here just make sure you enter the correct path to the shutter images directory in that file!

3. Upload all the files to a web host. If you do not have one, you can use the sharing option in Dropbox.

4. In your website, put this right before the </head> tag:
<script type="text/javascript">
shutterOnload = function(){shutterReloaded.Init();}
</script>
<script src="shutter.js" type="text/javascript"/>
<link href="shutter.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"/>
And put the full path to the .js and .css files you uploaded, for instance:
rel='http://mywebsite.com/shutter/shutter.css'
Well, you got the idea.

Now, when you post a picture like this:
<a href="http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt135/bloghome/2009-05-23_212331.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt135/bloghome/th_2009-05-23_212331.png" alt="photobucket" /></a>
It will automatically use the Shutter effect. That means you do not need to use anything for the images to use Shutter Reloaded, they will be automatically picked up and shown using Shutter.

5. If you want to post a gallery, on every image in that gallery, use the following class for the hyperlink:
class="shutterset_setname"
For instance:
<a class="shutterset_mygallery1" href="http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt135/bloghome/2009-05-23_212331.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt135/bloghome/th_2009-05-23_212331.png" alt="photobucket" /></a>

For a gallery example (click the blue arrow at the bottom of the screen) and more advanced information, visit Shutter Reloaded's website.

NOTE: Wordpress users can install this Shutter Reloaded plugin.

GScrot Changes Name to Shutter, New Version Available

gscrot shutterGScrot has been re-launched with new features and a less anatomical name: Shutter :)

In case you don't know Shutter (from now on) is a screenshot application for Linux which can take screenshots of a specific area, a whole website, a windows or the whole screen and then apply different effects and then upload it to an image hosting website. There's also a censor tool to quickly obscure private information like email addresses from your images.

Major updates in Shutter 0.70 printing support, support for a whole lot of formats to save pictures in, support for watching changes to files (open the screenshot externally in Gimp, save it - and shutter updates its copy), integration with GVFS (you can upload sites that you’ve connected to via Places > Connect), better recognition for programs that can open a picture, faster thumbnail creation, and improved dialogs!

If you use Ubuntu, you can add Shutter repositories or download .deb files; there are also packages for archLinux, Fedora or Mandriva:
