Mailnag is an email notifier for GNOME 3. The application makes use of the GNOME 3 notifications system and works with both POP3 and IMAP servers (this includes Gmail).

Besides new mail notifications, Mailnag can also execute a command or a script on mail check or on mail arrival, can open new emails in your preferred email client and more. We've actually written about Mailnag before, but starting today, Mailnag is available in the WebUpd8 GNOME3 PPA so it's now even easier to install in Ubuntu. Mailnag now has its own official PPA - add it and install Mailnag using the following commands:

GmailWatcher is a Gmail notifier especially designed for Ubuntu. It supports multiple accounts, labels (you can select for which labels to receive notifications) and comes with Ubuntu Messaging Menu integration / NotifyOSD support.

The application displays the unread email count in the Ubuntu Messaging Menu and clicking it, you can see details such as the sender, title and so on, each under its label - all without having to open your browser.

I've been wanting to post this since I've read about it on Mark Shuttleworth's blog but a few bugs delayed it.


GmailWatcher is an Gmail notifier especially designed for Ubuntu: it uses the Messaging Menu, NotifyOSD notifications and preferences sync through UbuntuOne.

Gmail Notifier (which we've covered before) is a great way to integrate Gmail into the Ubuntu desktop as it makes use of libnotify and the indicator applet in Gnome.

The latest Gmail Notifier (1.7.1) was just released and it only comes with one new feature but which many have been waiting for: Gmail Notifier now supports Google Apps email accounts (Gmail for custom domains).


You can download Gmail Notifier 1.7.1 @ its website (Ubuntu .deb).

You can also use Desktop Webmail to set Gmail as your default mail application in Ubuntu.
