Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet Default Wallpaper Revealed

The default Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet wallpaper was revealed a few minutes ago. The wallpaper continues to use the polygon style introduced with the Ubuntu 14.04 default wallpaper, but without the orange. In fact, the new default wallpaper is mostly purple, as you can see below:

The winners of the Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet Community Wallpaper Contest were revealed yesterday. The new wallpapers didn't land in Vivid yet, but you can already download them via Launchpad.

Variety, one of the best wallpaper changers for Linux, has been updated to version 0.5.0, bringing support for automatically downloading wallpapers from Wallhaven and an option to add Reddit as an image source.

The new version also introduces a very cool new (optional) feature: a server-side companion (beta) which allows users to synchronize their wallpapers between computers, automatically retrieve wallpapers favorited by other Variety users, and more.

Variety, a cool wallpaper changer that works with most desktop environments (KDE, LXDE, Xfce, Unity, GNOME Shell, Cinnamon or Pantheon), reached version 0.4.19 today, bringing support for Panoramio as image source, support for the Enlightenment desktop environment, fixes for Flickr and Wallpapers.net and more.

For those not familiar with Variety, this is a wallpaper changer that automatically downloads wallpapers from sources such as Wallbase, Flickr, Wallpapers.net, Desktoppr, custom RSS feeds, NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day as well as World Sunlight Map: a live Earth wallpaper which changes throughout the day. Using it, you can get a new, beautiful wallpaper automatically at the interval you set in the application preferences.

The application can even apply fancy filters to the images: grayscale, heavy blur, oil painting, charcoal painting, pointilism or pixellate as well as display quotes or the time on top of the wallpaper.

Download All The Ubuntu Community Wallpapers From Karmic To Trusty

Each Ubuntu release ships with 15-20 beautiful wallpapers created by the community. For every Ubuntu version starting with Karmic (9.10), there's a package that contains all these community wallpapers, which you can install in newer Ubuntu releases.

By using the instructions below, you can install all the Ubuntu community wallpapers from Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala to Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander (138 wallpapers!), in the latest Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

If you don't use Ubuntu or you're using an older release, there's a download link at the end of the article which allows you to download all the wallpapers from Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) to Trusty Tahr (14.04).

Wallpaper Changer With Multi-Monitor Support `SyncWall` 2.0.0 Released, Available In PPA

SyncWall, a Qt wallpaper changer with multi-monitor support, was updated to version 2.0.0 recently and the new version is now available in the main WebUpd8 PPA for all supported Ubuntu versions.

SyncWall doesn't support downloading wallpapers automatically, like Variety Wallpaper Changer for instance, but it has some interesting features that aren't available in other similar apps (that I know of anyway): for instance, SyncWall can span a single wallpaper over multiple monitors (you can do this with a single wallpaper from the Appearance settings, but that doesn't work when using a wallpaper changer).

Also, the application can synchronize your current wallpaper across your local network.

Use Wallpaper Clocks, Live Earth Wallpaper In Ubuntu With Slidewall

Slidewall is a wallpaper changer that comes with some interesting features: besides allowing you to use all images in a folder as a wallpaper slideshow, the application supports live wallpapers: live earth wallpaper, wallpaper clocks and more.

According to its PPA description, the application was especially created for Unity, but it should work with GNOME Classic / GNOME Shell too. It's also worth mentioning that Slidewall always starts minimized which is a bit confusing and might make you think it doesn't start - but it does, just look for its icon in the launcher.

In the Ubuntu 12.04 community wallpapers post, I was telling you about some plans to provide packages for the wallpapers in each Ubuntu version. Well, as it turns out, this hasn't been postponed after all and an updated "ubuntu-wallpapers" package has landed in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin which lets you install the community wallpapers from Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid, Maverick, Natty, Oneiric and obviously, Precise.
