We finally have a free software tool to extract RARv3 archives on Linux. The news comes from a post on the Free Software Foundation (thanks to Peter Slavek who sent us the tip!) blog which presents a new tool that can extract archives in many different formats, including RARv3.

Here's a quick tip which many will find very handy. UNP is a small script which makes it very easy to extract almost any archive via command line. If you can't remember the command to extract tar.gz, rar and so on, you will love unp.

ArchView is a Firefox add-on which can open archive file online without downloading the whole archive. Just like normal web pages. It is very fast since it merely fetches a small portion of the archive file from server. ArchView supports RAR, ZIP formats and ISO CD image; HTTP, FTP and file: protocols.
