The application is very similar to Transmission Remote GUI in terms of Bittorrent functionality, however, Transmission Remote GTK integrates better with the GNOME desktop (since it's a GTK app; sadly it's GTK2 only), comes with torrent added/downloaded notifications as well as tray / Ubuntu AppIndicator support.

"Transmission-Unity-Launcher" is a python script that provides Unity launcher integration for Transmission BitTorrent client. For now, the script displays the number of downloads and total download progress but in the future it might get more features, like menu items to control the speed, start or stop torrents.

Transmission (bittorrent client) 2.10 was released a few days ago, and while it doesn't bring major changes, the new version includes several performance improvements (small memory cache to reduce disk IO and some minor CPU optimizations), support for a cookies.txt file, support for automatically stopping idle seeding torrents, new command line options and other changes which you can see HERE.

The latest Transmission 2.10 is available in the Transmission stable PPA for Ubuntu Hardy, Karmic, Lucid and Maverick so to install it, use the following commands:

Transmission 2.0 (Bittorrent client for Linux and MacOS X) has just been released, featuring "Local Peer Discovery" for finding peers on your local network, optimize download requests for the bandwidth available, faster local data verification and startup, smarter heuristics when deciding the order to connect to peers, use IEC standard units (KiB, MiB, GiB) instead of (KB, MB, GB) and many other new features and improvements.

I've used rTorrent and wTorrent (which I've already posted how to set up) and also ruTorrent and various Web UIs for rTorrent but I've came to the conclusion that the best way (for me at least) for remote Bittorrent download is Transmission Remote GUI - I've been using it for a few days now and love it. Please note that I've only tested it on a remote Debian server but I've adapted everything for Ubuntu so it should work for it too.

In this article, I will cover installing and configuring transmission-daemon in a headless (but should work on a normal Debian / Ubuntu install too) Debian or Ubuntu machine.
