LightDM GTK+ Greeter Settings is a small GUI written in Python which lets you modify various LightDM GTK+ Greeter settings, such as the theme, font, background, window position and more, settings which otherwise can only be set by modifying the greeter configuration files.

Light Locker is a new session locker for LightDM forked from GNOME Screensaver (3.6.1). The tool doesn't have any desktop-specific dependencies and it locks and unlocks the session via ConsoleKit / UPower or logind / systemd.

Some Ubuntu users are reporting LightDM errors when using a SSD: about half the time when starting the computer, LightDM (the default Ubuntu display manager) doesn't load correctly and only a black screen and a blinking command line cursor shows up. The issue isn't limited to those who are using a SSD, but it's a lot more frequent when booting Ubuntu from a solid-state drive.

I too am experiencing this issue with Ubuntu 12.10 (not tested on older Ubuntu versions because I didn't have a SSD when I was using 12.04) and I've found two possible workarounds which have worked for me so I thought I'd share them with you, in case you're experiencing the same issue.

Unity Greeter 0.2.4 (the LightDM login screen theme) has been uploaded to the Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin repositories and it comes with a cool new session chooser dialog (screenshot above) which replaces the old menu.

A new Unity Greeter (the default LightDM greeter for Ubuntu) version has been released for testing in the Ubuntu Desktop PPA, and it brings support for reading the user background, along with other minor tweaks.
