Daily Ubuntu / Linux news and application reviews.

Gmail has launched a new design recently and the themes were updated with some beautiful backgrounds. WebUpd8 reader Dmitry Shachnev has discovered that you can download these backgrounds so you can use them as desktop wallpapers.

The wallpapers come in different sizes: 1050x600, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 (might be others too). Here are a few of these Gmail wallpapers (posted only as previews, don't try to download them - see below):

I'm not aware of the wallpapers license so I can't post a download link for all of them. And since I hate clicking 30 times for something that can be done by running a few commands, I've created a script that automatically downloads all the Gmail HD themes wallpapers (around 31). You can specify the resolution too. To use it, copy/paste the following commands in a terminal (or download the script from HERE):
sudo apt-get install wget
cd && wget http://webupd8.googlecode.com/files/gmail-backgrounds_0.2.tar.gz
tar -xvf gmail-backgrounds_0.2.tar.gz
chmod +x gmail-backgrounds
./gmail-backgrounds RESOLUTION
In the last command above, replace RESOLUTION with one of the following: 1050x600, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050 or 1920x1200. The script will create a folder called "gmail-wallpapers" and will download all wallpapers inside this folder.

If you want to manually download the wallpapers, you can find a list of links HERE. For a different resolution, replace "1920x1200" in each link with the resolution you want (see above).

Thanks to Dmitry Shachnev for the tip!
