Daily Ubuntu / Linux news and application reviews.

Wine 1.2 final will be released in June with 64 bit support. But the first Wine 1.2 release candidate is already out and it doesn't bring 64bit support just yet, but it does come with lots of improvements:

  • Many new toolbar icons.
  • Support for alpha blending in image lists.
  • Much more complete shader assembler.
  • Support for Arabic font shaping and joining.
  • A number of fixes for video rendering.
  • Font antialiasing configuration through fontconfig.
  • Improved handling of desktop link files.
  • Various bug fixes.

A full list of changes can be found HERE.

Wine 1.2 RC1 is already available in the Wine PPA and you can install it with:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you've installed Wine with Pulseaudio, don't add the above PPA as it will overwrite your Pulseaudio Wine installation!

Update: for WINE with Pulseaudio support (RC 1), add this PPA (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx only!):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:c-korn/ppa && sudo apt-get update

Then do:
sudo apt-get upgrade

Thanks to Eetu Huisman for the updated WINE Pulseaudio PPA!
