YouTube has been supporting HD videos for about a year, but the maximum resolution was 720p.

1080p is also referred as "full HD" or "true high definition", being the maximum resolution currently supported (well, almost). Beginning next week, YouTube will add support for 1080p videos, but of course, you'll need to have 1080p quality videos if you want to benefit the new YouTube feature.

A growing number of consumer video cameras are now supporting the true HD format, so it makes sense that YouTube would want to up the stakes in terms of quality.
