Linux users have Conky and Windows users... well, Windows Vista and 7 come with a sidebar, but LongBar is a really interesting alternative and I especially like it because it's open source.
LongBar can run "mini applications" for direct access to programs, system statistics, Facebook updates, sticky notes and more. Other LongBar features include: moving LongBar to any part of your desktop, skins, etc.
There are two LongBar versions: one which works on Windows XP or Vista (version 1.4) and one for Windows Vista or Windows 7 (version 2.0), so be careful what version you choose when downloading.
