Unknown Horizons

Unknown Horizons is a FREE and open-source, real-time 2D strategy game for Windows and Linux. The game emphasis on economy and city building:

Expand your small settlement to a strong and wealthy colony, collect taxes and supply your inhabitants with valuable goods. Increase your power with a well balanced economy and with strategic trade and diplomacy.


Unknown Horizons is loosely oriented on Sunflowers Anno series however not a clone of these comercial games nor an engine to play the original content.

Key Unknown Horizons gameplay elements:



Urban development

* Build a blooming metropolis from scratch with residential areas, industrial estates, service trade and lots of sights.

Commodities management

* Organize your resources to feed, extend and defend your growing city.

Diplomacy

* Deal with other players to schedule conditions of trade agreements and non-aggression pacts.

Trade

* Exchange stock with other players, free traders and local settlements to ensure your stores keeping reserves for the bad times.

Strategy

* Painfully trouble your enemies with strategic pinpricks and take advantage of all their little mistakes to solidify your position.

Exploration

* Find new islands, trade routes and resource deposits to raise your city's wealth and extend your reach.



There aren't any minimum system requirements posted on Unknown Horizon website, however it is stated that a processor of at least 2GH is required, although they plan to make the game work for older processors.

Unknown Horizon version 2009.2 was recently released, bringing some really interesting improvements such as:

  • Entirely reworked consummation and productivity for more interesting gameplay
  • Basic scenario/campaign functionality via simple YAML files
  • Demo scenario in form of a short tutorial
  • Settlers can now level up
  • New resources
  • New buildings: farm and school (school is still looking for nice gfx)
  • Improved graphics and building preview
  • New sounds effects
  • Wild life
  • More stable then ever before


Install Unknown Horizon in Ubuntu or Debian


To install the latest version and weekly updates, add the following repository (paste the commands in a terminal):

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://packages.unknown-horizons.org/$distribution weekly main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"


replacing $distribution with your Ubuntu / Debian distribution (intrepid, jaunty, jarmic for Ubuntu or lenny, sid, squeeze for Debian)

Then add the GPG key using the following command:
wget http://deb.unknown-horizons.org/key -O- | sudo apt-key add -


And finally, install Unknown Horizon:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install unknown-horizons
