brazil open sourceThe Brazilian government saved 370 million dollars (around 123.8 million euros) using free software applications, according to the Federal Service of Data Processing (Serpro), linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Finance.

The use of open source licenses for operating systems, browsers, e-mail programs and other applications has saved the equivalent to double the investments in development programs of the declaration of income tax or the equivalent of about one quarter of the annual budget of Serpro, considered the largest data processing services in South America.

After the adoption of free software by the Brazilian government, 40 percent of the state computers is already equipped with open source software.
