Download Digikam 1.0 Final .deb For Ubuntu Karmic Koala

DigiKam 1.0 was recently released and it features lot of new features and improvements (see the full list, here).

digiKam is an advanced digital photo management application for Linux, Windows, and Mac-OSX.

DigiKam 1.0 final is currently only available in source files or pre-compiled with KDE-Windows installer, but there are some .deb files available for Ubuntu Karmic you can install if you can't wait to take the new DigiKam 1.0 final for a spin (that's right, the final DigiKam 1.0 isn't even available yet in the Kubuntu Beta PPA):

Adobe Lightroom 3 Available for Beta Testing For Free

Adobe lets you download and use the recently released Adobe Lightroom 3 public beta, for FREE! There is however a catch. You can download the beta and use it until the product expires. The current Lightroom 3 public beta will expire on April 30, 2010.

Adobe Lightroom 3 is a digital darkroom and efficient assistant designed for serious amateur and prefessional photographers. With Lightroom, you can organize, enhance, and showcase your images all from one fast and nimble application that’s available on Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Cross-Platform: Edit Images in Bulk With Phatch

Phatch (works on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX) is a simple to use GUI Photo Batch Processor which handles all popular image formats. Phatch can batch resize, rotate, apply perspective, shadows, rounded corners, and more. Also, it allows you to use EXIF and IPTC tags for renaming and data stamping.

Installing Phatch

Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install phatch
Recommended additional packages:
  • To save EXIF and IPTC data: install python-pyexiv2
  • For cool nautilus integration: install python-nautilus
To install them both:
sudo apt-get install python-pyexiv2 && sudo apt-get install python-nautilus

If you want the latest version - 2.0, you can use Phatch Launchpad PPA, but installing it from there, it will install all the packages with which Phatch can interact. This includes Blender, Inkscape, imagemagick and so on.

Paint.NET Plug-ins

The following package contains a compilation of various Paint.NET plug-ins and you can download it from HERE.

To install the plug-ins, extract the contents of the above archive into the Effects folder in your Paint.NET installation directory. Then, restart Paint.NET.

Once you open Paint.NET you can check them around Image, Layers, Adjustments and Effects.

Digital Photo Editing Made Easy With Fotoxx [Linux]

Fotoxx is a free open source Linux program for editing digital photos. The goal of fotoxx is to meet most photo editing needs while remaining easy to use.


Among Fotoxx features:

-Navigate images using a pageable thumbnail window.
-Change brightness and contrast, change color intensity, saturation, depth, make panoramas and HDR images, fix red-eyes, trim, rescale, rotate, warp, fix perspective, sharpen, blur, remove noise, add artistic effects.
-Edit within mouse-selected area.
-Import RAW files, edit 16 bits/color.
-Add tags to images, search by tags, dates, and star-ratings.

Fotoxx has enough features to make it a powerful image editor. It needs some more work in several areas, but overall, it is a nice, light alternative to other, more popular programs.

Lightweight But Powerful Image Editing Application: mtPaint [Windows & Linux]

GIMP, despite it's interface, is the best open-source image editor. But often all you want to do is simply resize a picture or a similar minor task and for that you could use an application such as mtPaint which has a lot of great features such as:

  • Quickly transform image gamma, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, posterize from a single dialog, and preview the results in real time.
  • Apply various effects such as invert, greyscale, isometric transformations, edge detect, sharpen, unsharp mask, soften, Gaussian blur, emboss, bacteria.
  • Use gamma correction on effects to improve the quality of various effects.
  • Crop at the touch of a button.
  • Resize the canvas.
  • Rescale the canvas, enlarging or reducing, using several filter methods.
  • Tools to shuffle pixels, flood fill, draw straight lines, smudge, clone, paste text, draw/fill rectangle/ellipses.
  • And many others.

This image editing application isn't an advance tool, but it's not a basic one either, so you might really enjoy it.

mtPaing runs on Windows and Linux. It even comes with pre-build .deb packages for Ubuntu.

While adjusting various settings, you may explore how image quality and file size change. Options to reduce file size of an image include setting compression quality, number or colors, resizing, cropping, Exif information removal, etc.

Download Inkscape 0.47 Pre-Release

Inkscape 0.47 pre-release is now available for download. In case you do not know, Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.) and great care is taken in designing a streamlined interface. It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more

Before installing 0.47 prerelease, read the release notes.

The prerelease is currently available as source code and a Mac build and binary builds for Ubuntu. Fedora users can also use testing repository to fetch recent builds. Windows binary builds might follow, but you can use nightly builds for now.

To install it in Ubuntu Jaunty, open a terminal and:

1. Add the repo:
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/inkscape.testers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/inkscape.testers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main' >> /etc/apt/sources.list"

2. Import the Launchpad key:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys B9DC2CA0

If you are still getting errors about the PPA key, use this script.

3. Installation:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
