Popcorn Time is a new open source Netflix-style torrent streaming application which attracted a lot of media attention in the past few days.

The application allows users to stream movies (with subtitles) at no cost, making it illegal in most countries and because of that, the Popcorn Time downloads were removed, at least for now.

Update 15-mar-2014: the application stopped working. The code is still available, but the APIs Popcorn Time was using don't work any more.

Update 17-mar-2014:
  • Popcorn Time works again and there are Linux binaries (for both 32bit and 64bit) available for download at its website.
  • I've re-written the script to work with the latest Popcorn Time. You can use the script to get the latest Popcorn Time version from GIT. To use it, re-download the script!

Update 14-may-2014: I updated the script to work with Popcorn Time 0.3.

Update 20-may-2014:  MrVaykadji has rewritten the script and it now includes multi-platform building (optional) along with an option to remove Popcorn Time.

Since Popcorn Time is open source and its code is available on GitHub, you can build the app from source yourself and below you'll find a script that does everything automatically.

How to install Popcorn Time from source (Git) in Ubuntu using a script

Important notice: Popcorn Time streams movies from torrents and that may be illegal in your country. Use it at your own risk! The application uses the YIFY movie torrents API and will not work if that's blocked in your country.

The script below was created by AskUbuntu user MrVaykadji and I've modified it a bit to install a newer nodejs version (without this, the grunt-cli install would fail), use a proper Popcorn Time icon, etc. The script is very basic and it doesn't do proper error checking. Use it at your own risk!

Here's what the script does: it installs the required dependencies, clones the Popcorn Time GIT repository, builds Popcorn Time for your Ubuntu architecture, installs Popcorn Time and creates a desktop entry for it. Also, there are some bugs which the script attempts to fix so Popcorn Time builds and installs properly.

To build and install Popcorn Time in Ubuntu we're using THIS script. Download and run the script (which will build and install Popcorn Time in Ubuntu) using the following commands:
cd
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MrVaykadji/misc/master/Popcorn-Time/0.3.0/build-popcorn
chmod +x build-popcorn
./build-popcorn

If you want to remove Popcorn Time, using the same script above, run:
popcorn-time --uninstall

Arch Linux users can install Popcorn Time via AUR: latest beta | git.

Report any bugs you may find @ GitHub.
